Chicken and egg: was Luna an asshole who started drugs and became even more of an asshole, or did she start drugs that turned into an asshole? A lot of what's wrong with her has little to do with her addiction - e.g. her desperate attempts at focusing everything into a mad scramble for sympathy (some bum died, so she wrote a story that made it look as if he had been her closest friend so people tell her they're sorry etc.) derive from her being an asshole, not from her addiction. Anyone who consciously wants to become a junkie for an aesthetic is already way deeply fucked imho.
In some cases, a woman doesn’t make enough of the hormones needed to ovulate. When ovulation doesn’t happen, the ovaries can develop many small cysts. These cysts make hormones called androgens. Women with PCOS often have high levels of androgens. This can cause more problems with a woman’s menstrual cycle. And it can cause many of the symptoms of PCOS.
Some other blood tests are suggestive but not diagnostic. The ratio of LH (Luteinizing hormone) to FSH (Follicle-stimulating hormone), when measured in international units, is elevated in women with PCOS. Common cut-offs to designate abnormally high LH/FSH ratios are 2:1[66] or 3:1[62] as tested on Day 3 of the menstrual cycle. The pattern is not very sensitive; a ratio of 2:1 or higher was present in less than 50% of women with PCOS in one study.[66] There are often low levels of sex hormone-binding globulin,[62] in particular among obese or overweight women.[citation needed]

PCOS is a heterogeneous disorder of uncertain cause.[23][24] There is some evidence that it is a genetic disease. Such evidence includes the familial clustering of cases, greater concordance in monozygotic compared with dizygotic twins and heritability of endocrine and metabolic features of PCOS.[7][23][24] There is some evidence that exposure to higher than typical levels of androgens in utero increases the risk of developing PCOS in later life.[25]
Diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is relatively straightforward. Common criteria established by the Rotterdam Conference in 2003 include at least two of three characteristics (oligomenorrhea, clinical and/or biochemical hyperandrogenism and ultrasound criteria) in the absence of other disease. PCOS is the most common hormonal disorder in women worldwide with prevalence estimates between 4%-8% but as high as 25% in some populations[1]. Women often initiate medical care for a cluster of PCOS symptoms (infertility, hirsutism and irregular menstrual cycles) that ultimately are not the most concerning medical consequences of PCOS [diabetes mellitus (DM), coronary artery disease (CAD), endometrial hyperplasia/cancer]. Here exists an important paradigm in the recognition and treatment of PCOS.

This led the researchers to experiment with blocking the body from responding to this excess GnRH. They treated a separate group of pregnant mice with AMH but also another drug that blocks the body from responding to the higher levels of GnRH (called a “GnRH antagonist”). They followed the daughter pups born to these mothers, and turns out they didn’t develop PCOS-like symptoms! They also wanted to see if they could give GnRH antagonist to daughter pups who had already developed PCOS-like symptoms (because their mothers only received high levels of AMH while pregnant). After treatment with the GnRH antagonist, the daughter pups’ hormone levels started to normalize and they ovulated more than those who didn’t get the antagonist treatment.
Cimicifuga racemosa was found to lower LH in two laboratory studies both examining cell cultures from ovariectomised rats [45, 52] (Table 1). The mechanism occurred through competitive inhibition of oestrogen following the selective binding of oestrogen receptors (ERα) on the hypothalamus and pituitary [52]. An earlier study found contrary results for reduction of LH, however this study investigated an isolated flavonoid and suggested that other constituents may be active [37].
High levels of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that controls how the food you eat is changed into energy. Insulin resistance is when the body's cells do not respond normally to insulin. As a result, your insulin blood levels become higher than normal. Many women with PCOS have insulin resistance, especially those who have overweight or obesity, have unhealthy eating habits, do not get enough physical activity, and have a family history of diabetes (usually type 2 diabetes). Over time, insulin resistance can lead to type 2 diabetes.
