Oldfag from up top. Just saying yes, thank you and agreed. On all my medical paperwork it says that I have benzodiazepine dependency. I am physically dependent but I also function–I can work, I can manage my life. The thing that upsets me is that these days, I would never have been given benzos as the first med for my illness, I would have been given something that's less physically addictive and potentially dangerous. In the long term I believe benzos aren't good for you at all, and I'm certainly long term.
Not all women with PCOS have difficulty becoming pregnant. For those that do, anovulation or infrequent ovulation is a common cause. Other factors include changed levels of gonadotropins, hyperandrogenemia and hyperinsulinemia. Like women without PCOS, women with PCOS that are ovulating may be infertile due to other causes, such as tubal blockages due to a history of sexually transmitted diseases.
“If a woman has fewer than eight menstrual periods a year on a chronic basis, she probably has a 50 to 80 percent chance of having polycystic ovary syndrome based on that single observation,” said John Nestler, the chair of the department of internal medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University. “But if she has infrequent menstruation and she has elevated levels of androgens such as testosterone in the blood, than she has a greater than 90 percent chance of having the condition.”
PCOS is due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Risk factors include obesity, not enough physical exercise, and a family history of someone with the condition. Diagnosis is based on two of the following three findings: no ovulation, high androgen levels, and ovarian cysts. Cysts may be detectable by ultrasound. Other conditions that produce similar symptoms include adrenal hyperplasia, hypothyroidism, and high blood levels of prolactin.
This month, a groundbreaking study was published in the journal Nature Medicine that might have found a treatment for this disorder. The research was lead by Dr. Paolo Giacobini at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research. The authors’ goal was to determine if something in the environment of the womb could be causing PCOS. We have known for awhile that PCOS runs in families (so if your mother or sister has PCOS, you may be more likely to have PCOS because you share genes that are associated with the disorder) but there don’t seem to be enough carriers of these genes to explain the high prevalence of PCOS (again, 10% of women!).
Insulin-sensitizing agents are indicated for most women with PCOS because they have positive effects on insulin resistance, menstrual irregularities, anovulation, hirsutism, and obesity. Of all the drugs used to treat manifestations of PCOS, metformin (Glucophage) has the most data supporting its effectiveness. Table 1 details the most common medications used to treat manifestations of PCOS.6–27
GlucX is a combination of natural fibers designed to help regulate the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream while helping to maintain healthy cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, and insulin levels.* Because high insulin levels promote PCOS, this product is essential to reducing insulin spiking.* Additionally, research demonstrates the benefits of high fiber intake on weight management and cardiovascular support.* GlucX contains fenugreek, a botanical, that decreases the absorption of carbohydrates into the bloodstream as well as prevents insulin spikes that occur with carbohydrate intake.* Fenugreek also has specific benefits for blood sugar balancing.
2. Oestrogen receptor binding affinity for Cimicifuga racemosa was studied using pituitary cell cultures from ovariectomised rats. This study followed a clinical study demonstrating significantly lowered LH in post-menopausal women following administration of Cimicifuga racemosa (2 mg for two months) against placebo control (n = 110) 2. Increases luteal progesterone concentration [65, 67, 68]
Women with PCOS have been shown to have higher levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in their blood. AGEs are compounds formed when glucose binds with proteins, and are believed to contribute to certain degenerative diseases and aging. One small study found that cutting down on dietary AGEs significantly reduced insulin levels in women with PCOS. Foods high in AGEs include animal-derived foods and processed foods. Applying high heat (grilling, searing, roasting) increases levels.
I worded that badly. What I mean is that opiates themselves don't relieve pain, but alter the perception of pain. It's possible to alter that perception of pain in other ways, which is why substances like SSRIs cause significant pain relief for some people with some conditions. Ditto with anticonvulsants. Opioids aren't the only drugs that affect norepinephrine and mU receptors, they just happen to be the best at it. If the pleasurable effects of opioids were blocked, there's still therapeutic potential in the "inert" components, like THC vs. CBD.
hi dok. kagagaling ko lang po sa OB ko knina at first time ko po mag pa check up at nalaman ko nga po na my PCOS po ako, my posibilidad po pala na mbuntis po ako, june po darating asawa ko, my posibilidad na po kaya na makabuo po kame bago po sya bumalik sa work nia ? niresetahan po ako ng metformin at tska po ung kulay yellow na parang fish oil.. my mas better pa po ba na gamot bukod po dun ?
It's what's prescribed to me by a health care specialist aka my psychiatrist so I think I'm doing ok? It would be awful to get off of but I still exist like a regular person and sleep 8 hours a night thanks to seoquel. It did make me gain weight but I have that in control now. I can still do math problems and read books.. I just forget what I'm talking about sometimes
Fasting methods to measure IR have been advocated for many years as an adjunct to DM screening. Elevated fasting insulin levels greater than 20 μU/mL may alone indicate IR. Fasting glucose/insulin ratio (G/I) has also gained some clinical traction. A ratio < 4.5 has in general been shown to be > 90% sensitive in some populations but has never been validated with clamp studies. Some ethnic variation in G/I cutoff ratios may exist. There has been some suggestion that G/I < 7 in very young girls may predict IR[50,51].
For those women that after weight loss still are anovulatory or for anovulatory lean women, then the ovulation-inducing medications clomiphene citrate and FSH are the principal treatments used to promote ovulation.[medical citation needed] Previously, the anti-diabetes medication metformin was recommended treatment for anovulation, but it appears less effective than clomiphene.[medical citation needed]
Pre-clinical and clinical evidence was found for Vitex agnus-castus for lowered prolactin, improved menstrual regularity and treatment of infertility. Vitex agnus-castus contains a variety of compounds which bind to dopamine type 2 (DA-2) receptors in the brain; reduce cyclic adenosine mono phosphate (cAMP) and lowered prolactin secretion (Table 1). This was demonstrated in studies using recombinant DA-2 receptor proteins, and basal and stimulated rat pituitary cell cultures [38–41]. Prolactin lowering effects were found in normal and ovariectomised rats . Additional agonistic opiate effects were observed in studies using human opiate receptors cell cultures .

When a woman is not menstruating or ovulating, an insufficient amount of the hormone progesterone is produced. This hormonal imbalance can lead to an overgrowth of the lining of the uterus (endometrial hyperplasia) and can increase a woman's risk of developing endometrial cancer. Women with PCOS who do ovulate and become pregnant tend to have an increased risk of complications such as miscarriage.
A diet patterned after the type 2 diabetes diet has been recommended for PCOS patients. This diet emphasizes increased fiber; decreased refined carbohydrates, trans fats, and saturated fats; and increased omega-3 and omega-9 fatty acids. However, in some obese patients with PCOS, weight loss has improved menstrual regularity. Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation has been shown to reduce liver fat content and other cardiovascular risk factors in women with PCOS, including those with hepatic steatosis, although these effects have not yet been proven to translate into a reduction in cardiometabolic events.
Ethanol extracts 1. One study examined the oestrogenic effects of Tribulus terrestris on uterine and vaginal tissue of ovariectomised rats . 1. Healthy women n = 8 early menstrual cycle (follicular phase) Pre and post serum hormone concentration for FSH, LH testosterone and oestradiol at 8 am and 12 pm. Intervention consisted of Tribulus Terrestris 250 mg per day over five days. Results showed significant increase in FSH and rise in LH (not significant), an increase in oestradiol and no change in testosterone concentration 1. Ovulation induction in polycystic ovaries [46, 47].
Contrary to the implication of “polycystic,” some women with the condition don’t have any cysts. A diagnosis requires only two of the following three criteria to be met: elevated levels of male sex hormones (which can cause excess hair growth, acne, and baldness), irregular or absent periods, and/or at least 12 follicular cysts on one or both ovaries.
