If a regular menstrual cycle is not desired, then therapy for an irregular cycle is not necessarily required. Most experts say that, if a menstrual bleed occurs at least every three months, then the endometrium (womb lining) is being shed sufficiently often to prevent an increased risk of endometrial abnormalities or cancer.[93] If menstruation occurs less often or not at all, some form of progestogen replacement is recommended.[92] An alternative is oral progestogen taken at intervals (e.g., every three months) to induce a predictable menstrual bleeding.[medical citation needed]

The syndrome acquired its most widely used name due to the common sign on ultrasound examination of multiple (poly) ovarian cysts. These "cysts" are actually immature follicles not cysts. The follicles have developed from primordial follicles, but the development has stopped ("arrested") at an early antral stage due to the disturbed ovarian function. The follicles may be oriented along the ovarian periphery, appearing as a 'string of pearls' on ultrasound examination.[citation needed]

What matters most: Your goal when losing weight is to aim specifically to reduce the fat around your abdomen (belly fat). This requires boosting your metabolism like women who had PCOS did in an Italian weight loss study.7 Those who rode exercise bikes for 30 minutes, three times a week, lost more abdominal fat than those who shed pounds by just eating less.7 You won’t be successful if you only change your diet. More women in the exercise group than the diet group began ovulating even though both groups lost similar amounts of weight.7

According to a recent study published in the Endocrine Society’s March 2015 issue of Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, women diagnosed with PCOS are twice as likely to be hospitalized for heart disease, diabetes, mental-health conditions, reproductive disorders, and cancer of the uterine lining. The cost of evaluating and providing care to women with PCOS is approximately $4.36 billion per year.

In anovulatory women with PCOS defined according to the Rotterdam consensus (includes all phenotypes except the one defined by the association of hyperandrogenism with ultrasound (US) findings), CC treatment is the first choice for ovulation induction 9,15. This drug is an estrogen receptor modulator (it can act as an estrogen agonist or antagonist) and its mechanism of action is controversial but can be explained as follows. In physiological menstrual cycles, low levels of estrogen promote negative feedback in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland and inhibit the endogenous secretion of gonadotropin during the early follicular phase. When CC is administered in this phase of the cycle, it competes with estrogen for its receptors in the hypothalamus and pituitary, which will block the negative feedback mechanism. Consequently, increased levels of endogenous gonadotropins are released and the dominant follicle is recruited (follicle that has the highest number of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) receptors) between the sixth and ninth day of the menstrual cycle 16.
Not necessarily. I've been on Benzos off and on since I was 13 (12 years) for panic attacks, social anxiety, etc. and I'm fine. There are also Benzos that give less of that 'floaty feeling' like Ativan. Not to start a discussion about what addiction is or isn't but I think how a drug makes you think and feel and want is completely personal and genetic.
More powerful and expensive imaging methods such as computed tomography (CT scan) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can also detect cysts, but they are generally reserved for situations in which other conditions that may cause related symptoms, such as ovarian or adrenal gland tumors are suspected. CT scans require X-rays and sometimes injected dyes, which can be associated with some degree of complications in certain patients.
Chaste berry (Vitex agnus-castus): This herb has been used for centuries for hormone imbalances and is considered an adaptogen. Chaste berry is one of the most common herbs used to treat PCOS because it helps to stimulate and stabilize the function of the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is responsible for the release of luteinising hormone which can reduce the level of estrogen and androgen levels while raising progesterone levels.

Fertility Treatments: Once other possible reasons for infertility in you and your partner have been ruled out, your gynecologist or fertility specialist may recommend the drug clomiphene (Clomid) to induce ovulation. Six months of treatment has been known to achieve successful pregnancies for about 20-40% of women with PCOS,19 according to ACOG. If clomiphene is tried and isn’t effective, you may be given gonadotrophins to try and jumpstart your ovaries.

Gynecologic ultrasonography, specifically looking for small ovarian follicles. These are believed to be the result of disturbed ovarian function with failed ovulation, reflected by the infrequent or absent menstruation that is typical of the condition. In a normal menstrual cycle, one egg is released from a dominant follicle – in essence, a cyst that bursts to release the egg. After ovulation, the follicle remnant is transformed into a progesterone-producing corpus luteum, which shrinks and disappears after approximately 12–14 days. In PCOS, there is a so-called "follicular arrest"; i.e., several follicles develop to a size of 5–7 mm, but not further. No single follicle reaches the preovulatory size (16 mm or more). According to the Rotterdam criteria, which are widely used for diagnosis,[10] 12 or more small follicles should be seen in an ovary on ultrasound examination.[53] More recent research suggests that there should be at least 25 follicles in an ovary to designate it as having polycystic ovarian morphology (PCOM) in women aged 18–35 years.[59] The follicles may be oriented in the periphery, giving the appearance of a 'string of pearls'.[60] If a high resolution transvaginal ultrasonography machine is not available, an ovarian volume of at least 10 ml is regarded as an acceptable definition of having polycystic ovarian morphology instead of follicle count.[59]
